The Sea. La Mer. Das Meer. Havet. Il-bahar.

Whatever it is we call it, the sea is a big part of most of our lives, especially on an island nation such as Great Britain. As an island nation, the sea is a part of both our history and our national identity. On both sides of history the sea has been there, whether Britannia ruled the waves, the Spanish Armada, the Battle of the Atlantic or even the dreaded East India Company the sea has played a big part.
It is not surprising then, that there are so many songs and pieces of music that take the sea as its inspiration. Claude Debussy gave us La Mer. Edward Elgar presented his Sea Pictures. Richard Wagner composed the epic Flying Dutchman and Arthur Sullivan and WS Gilbert gave us HMS Pinafore.
SEMusic is based in Waterloo on the Sefton Coast. Perfectly positioned at the mouth of the Mersey Estuary with only Anthony Gormley's Another Place between us and the North Sea. From our vantage point we see the ships roll in and the ships roll out. Liverpool always an important port and is still a vibrant one as we welcome the big cruise ships rather than cargo ships, although they still come in. There's a new Mersey ferry on the way and a new ferry terminal as well.

With all this in mind, what could be better for SEMusic to celebrate the sea in our next concert: Songs of the Sea.
The choir are busy working on a variety of pieces ranging from traditional sea shanties, nursery rhymes, songs from musicals and more modern popular music to help celebrate the ocean blue that is just on our doorstep.
We've recently had to change the the date of our Songs of the Sea concert to Sunday 6th April, still at 7pm and still, mostly importantly in our original choice for venue. Our venue, is just down the road from our traditional home of St Edmund of Canterbury and still on the glorious Sefton Coast at the magnificent Victorian building of Our Lady, Star of the Sea church in Seaforth. A church dedicated to the sea, where we will sing songs about the sea. A perfect match in anyone's book.

Tickets will be going on sale shortly for the concert and will be priced slightly differently to normal. Our ticket price is £5. If you buy with cash directly from us you will pay no more than £5 a ticket. Our online sales platform, Eventbrite, do charge us for every ticket that we sell through them and while we are loathe to pass on this charge to our audience, when the ticket price is so low, losing the almost 22% of the ticket price is a large amount for us to lose. With a heavy-heart and hopefully, not too cost-prohibitive for you our audience, online tickets will be priced at £6.13.
We hope to see as many of you at Songs of the Sea as possible, so roll up your trouser legs and lets go wading in the water of the songs that remind us our our shared heritage: the sea.
